If you could have dinner with 1 person who you regard as a leader, who would it be and why?
Michelle Alexander, because her thoughts and ideas inspire me to think critically and to do more, and I would love to pick her brain.
What motivates you to create social impact?
The injustices that are all around me, and the opportunities I have been blessed with encourage me to create social impact in any and every way I can.
Host Site Overview
To help young people develop critical thinking, creative expression, and basic learning skills through the arts.
Host Site Project
Founded in 1965, Performing Arts Workshop helps young people develop critical thinking, creative expression, and essential learning skills through the arts. We are committed to creating more equitable access to music, dance, theater, spoken word, and music education. With a pioneering artists-in-residency model based on long-term, sequential instruction, the Workshop partners with Bay Area public schools, preschools, community centers, transitional housing facilities, and juvenile halls to reach more than 4,000 young people each year. Performing Arts Workshop relies on evaluations from site partners to measure and document student learning. We currently have an extensive evaluation survey for distribution at the end of each residency, using a retrospective pre/post evaluation method provided in hard copy to classroom teachers and site coordinators. The survey asks respondents to assess student learning across 10 domains. In part owing to the length and depth of the survey, return rates have presented a data collection challenge. In order to increase the power and reliability of our data, we seek to redesign our evaluation tools. In addition to creating new surveys for teachers, we also intend to devise an evaluation survey for students, to be piloted at select partner sites over the 2016-2017 academic year. Reporting to the Program Manager, the fellow will assist in the research of effective program evaluation systems and support the creation and internal dissemination of an updated evaluation tool. By improving our ability to document and assess student learning in our residencies, the fellow?s project will help the Workshop more accurately and effectively present the value of our work to relevant stakeholders.
