Practice Areas

Most of New Sector's client engagements fit into one of six practice areas:

Strategy: Social innovators produce an astonishing array of ideas for bringing about social change and promoting environmental sustainability. Strategy is the means through which organizations tie these ideas together into a single set of coherent, mission-focused activities. Clear strategies, goals, and objectives allow organizations to adapt quickly in the face of change and to identify new opportunities. New Sector works with organizations to analyze and develop strategies to make them more effective in achieving their mission. Typical projects: Setting Mission, Vision and Goals; Strategic Plans; New Program Development; Funding Models; Business Plans.

Operations: Through efficient and effective operations, organizations can make the most of the resources available to them. Combining strategic thinking with hands-on implementation, New Sector develops, defines, and executes operational strategies that help our clients solve their most critical problems and build their internal capacity. New Sector works with environmentally and socially responsible clients across sectors to analyze operations and create ways to make resource allocation more aligned, impactful and sustainable. Typical projects: Organizational Assessment; Operational Assessment; Operational Plans; Value Chain Mapping; Systems and Infrastructure Planning and Support.

Marketing: Effectively communicating the unique strengths of an organization to constituents and funders is critically important to success. These efforts must resonate with the values of the organization and the community in which it operates. New Sector works with clients across sectors to focus marketing efforts on the right people and right channels to produce the greatest environmental and social returns. Typical projects: Brand Strategy; Positioning Analysis; Cause-Related Marketing; Building Marketing Infrastructure.

Growth and Scaling: Many social innovators are driven by an unrelenting desire to effect systemic and lasting social change. Achieving large scale impact, however, presents challenges that are unique to each organization, and that must be considered vis-a-vis the competitive landscape in which organizations operate. New Sector works with clients focused on environmental and social impact to identify the most systematic way to expand reach within the context of mission, capabilities and goals. Typical projects: Program/Service Growth and Replication; Fundraising and Revenue Generation; External Relationship Building and Management.

Performance Management: Social and environmental changemakers are under constant, increasing pressure to do more with less. While social and environmental performance measurement can be challenging, New Sector believes that organizations can and should identify and measure key metrics. We partner with our clients to identify the metrics most relevant to their mission, and helps them use those metrics to improve overall performance and adjust programs, as necessary. Examples: Program Evaluation and Performance Analysis; Social Return on Investment Analysis; Balanced Scorecards; Dashboards.

Talent Development: New Sector clients across sectors say that talent recruitment and development is one of their foremost concerns. People are the building blocks and most important assets of all nonprofit, for-profit, and public organizations. Attracting, training, coaching, retaining and managing staff and Board members is an ever present management challenge. To address these crucial issues, New Sector provides organizational and individual consulting, training, and coaching services to clients. Typical projects: Human Resources Management (recruitment, development, and retention); Board Development and Governance; One-on-One Career Coaching.
