A core element of New Sector's mission is to provide opportunities for all levels of consultants - from senior partners to junior associates - to participate in significant skills-based volunteering. By participating in our programs, volunteers are able to apply their skills in the social sector and to grow as mentors and managers by coaching program participants. Consultants can get involved with New Sector in several ways:
Part-time coaching and advising: Depending on the program, volunteers work either one on one or with a team of program participants to provide coaching and guidance on analyses, client relationships, and presentations. In one on one settings, through our AmeriCorps Summer Fellows and Residency programs, there is an additional focus on the career development of the Fellow or Resident during their term of service and beyond. Typically consultant volunteers help guide the final phase of project scoping with the client to ensure success -- and provide input through weekly phone calls or meetings. Volunteers also receive support from New Sector to help them maximize their contributions and their own development. The typical time commitment is 1-2 hours per week, though additional time reviewing documents before key presentations is often necessary.
Professional development: Throughout the year, New Sector recruits experienced professionals to help us deliver training sessions and interactive workshops on key topics related to career development, consulting, leadership, and management. Workshops cover topics across all sectors: business, government, nonprofit and in between. We also engage professionals to provide one-on-one career coaching sessions to our student program participants, social impact clients, and alumni.
Secondments and externships: On occasion, New Sector offers full-time opportunities for consultants to get involved with our organization, either by participating in a larger, more in-depth consulting project, or by working on a high priority internal project designed to advance New Sector's mission, build capacity, or share knowledge within the social impact sector.
