Emily Hendel is a Family Nurse Practitioner and Director of Clinical Services at CommunityHealth, the nation’s largest free clinic for the uninsured, located in Chicago. She received her Master of Science in Nursing from DePaul University in 2004 and the same year started as a staff RN at CommunityHealth. In 2007, she transitioned to Nursing Manager, after receiving her Family Nurse Practitioner Postmasters Certificate from DePaul University. In 2013, Emily was promoted to Director of Nursing Services and then transitioned to the Director of Clinical Services in 2015.
Emily brings nearly 20 years of experience as a clinician and leader in the healthcare safety net. In her current position she oversees clinical quality and service delivery in primary care, nursing, behavioral health, dental, pharmacy, and care coordination. Emily also sits on the advisory boards for the DePaul University School of Nursing and The Chicago People’s Rights Collaborative and is an adjunct Instructor for Rush University College of Nursing. In 2022, she received the Academic Practice Partnership Award from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing along with her Rush College of Nursing colleagues. Emily is an active member of the Chicago area Albert Schweitzer Fellows for Life.
Originally from Northeastern Ohio, Emily has called Chicago home since 2002. She currently lives with her 15 year old daughter, Satchel, and beloved cat, Aruba, and enjoys kayaking and walking in the city, doing all sorts of puzzles, and exploring new restaurants.
